Aware that magnetic resonance imaging allows exploration of aspects of living anatomy, Schulz and team wanted to see if it was feasible to obtain images of the male and female genitals during coitus. They also wanted to test "whether former and current ideas about the anatomy during sexual intercourse and during female sexual arousal are based on assumptions or on facts."
The researchers recruited eight couples and three single women to engage in sexual acts inside an enlarged magnetic resonance tube of 50cm in diameter. The couples had complete privacy with intercom being the only means of communication with the control room, and four images were taken at different stages of copulation and arousal.
It turns out such imaging was indeed feasible, and they discovered that g 'missionary position' intercourse, the penis has the shape of a boomerang rather than an S as drawn by Dickinson. Also, in contrast to the findings of Masters and Johnson, there was no evidence of an increase in the volume of the uterus during sexual arousal. They did find, however that the uterus rises and the anterior vaginal wall lengthens.
