Carrol Cox : -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Bertell Ollman gave a very interesting paper at Amherst on the importance of the Flag to American nationalism. (He mentioned a joke re the Pledge of Allegiance: "I pldge allegiance to the country and to the flag for which it stands.") I can't remember the details, but his core point was that the flag was fetishized, but its meaning was given to the nation (or at least to the full-bodied nationalists) by the President. And now they were in a real bind: The Meaning of the flag was being represented by a Black Man. Carrol

^^^^^^^ CB: Yea, the right wing has a real semiotical quandry..

I'm toying with the question "Is the white power structure really allowing Obama to be President ?" , not in the sense that he didn't really win the election, but in the sense that they wouldn't accept him having the final say as Commander-in-Chief. If the extreme rightwing of the military-industrial-complex/National security state wouldn't let Kennedy be President for some very mild softness on Communism, would it really let a Black man be President, even as he occupies the White House ?

The great proletarian leader Dave Moore (http://lists.econ.utah.edu/pipermail/marxism-thaxis/2009-November/024749.html) said when Obama was elected , "I can't believe it. Am I dead or dreaming ? A Black man is President of the United States ! "
