We have one historical case to analyze here, so it seems a little strange to extrapolate from the last 500 years of human history to all possible histories. Capitalism is the product of a series of historical accidents; if it had developed under different sociohistorical conditions, it would be perpetuated by a different set of ideological tropes and social practices. There's nothing inevitable or necessary about actually existing capitalism or the ideology that supports it. (--Perhaps just file this under "there are more things in heaven and earth, Horatio, than are dreamt of in your philosophy".)

^^^^^ CB: Actually, I have an intuitio that I should take a chance and defer to Carrol to answer this, if he's reading this. I'm guessing he'd say something like the chances of another capitalism coming out of the contingencies is extremely remote, certainly not any time soon, especialy on earth. I don't think there are quite that many things on earth.

Again with respect, Horatio's line, amended, seems to be mine here , no ? It is your philosophy that posits more things than there are on earth.
