Not that this is any reason to reject them - the Copernican theory has no more empirical basis than Ptolemaic epicycles, either. This is also a good illustration of how modern science differs from what babies do in looking at the world and figuring stuff out; modern science is all about how to set aside ones immediate empirical experience in favor of theoretical constructions which are more true than immediate experience.
