The Romans never tried to get anywhere near Afghanistan. Crassus and Julian tried to campaign in Mesopotamia but both were beaten and killed by the Parthians. Caesar would have succeeded in beating the Parthians if he had not been assassinated (for reasons that remain murky even now) on the day before his campaign was to start. But he had absolutely no intention to go any further. Central Asia was never of any interest to the Romans.
