When Rosa Luxemburg coined her slogan, "socialism or b arbarism," she did so in the context of her conviction that Contingency ruled history, that one was in fact as likely as the other.

The idea of Progress, the silly squabbles between mainstream left and right, the excessive concern of would-be radicals (socialists) with the right (when there is no imminent danger of a rightist coup) are simply ways of avoiding history, of singing past the cmeetery of any left movement to oppose the drift towards deeper and deeper barbarism. Barbaism had arrived when Luxemburg coiined the slogan: it was the 20th century.

None of us really know WITBD in the preent. Admitting that fact forgetting the mere gossip which constitues mainstream political discussion would be a small start.
