Well, it looks like the post-1989 demographic decline in Russia has (virtually) stopped. Acccording to Goskomstat (http://www.gks.ru/bgd/free/b09_00/IssWWW.exe/Stg/d08/8-0.htm)

"the permanent population of the Russian Federation on August 1, 2009, was 141.9 million people and had decreased from the beginning of the year by 31,500 people, or 0.02% (the corresponding figure from the previous year being 125,100 people. or 0.09%)."

Interesting factoid: "The reduction of the population took place due to natural deaths in the population, which in January-July 2009 dropped in comparison with the corresponding period of 2008 by 86,700 people. Immigration compensated for the amount of population loss by 82.9%. (Сокращение численности населения происходило из-за естественной убыли населения, которая в январе-июле 2009г. уменьшилась по сравнению с соответствующим периодом 2008г. на 86,7 тыс.человек. Миграционный прирост на 82,9% компенсировал численные потери населения.)

2009 2008 Births 1012,6 975 Deaths 1196,6 1245,7

Also, from January-July 2009 there were 170485 (legal, full-time resident) immigrants, these being from:

CIS countries Belarus 3249 Kazakhstan 24581 Moldova 9665 Ukraine 27302 Azerbaijan 13866 Armenia 22260 Georgia 4496 Kyrgyzstan 14369 Tajikistan 16584 Turkmenistan 1904 Uzbekistan 26078

Non-CIS countries Germany 1491 Greece 117 Israel 475 Canada 53 China 443 Latvia 365 Lithuania 239 United States 329 Finland 93 Estonia 314 Other countries 2212
