There are many reasons for readng various conservative or reactionary philosophers or economists, but understanding the "enemy" is NOT one of them. It tells you nothing about actual fascism (or other authoritarian movements) to read the philosohers of fascism. Reading neoclassical economists can probably be useful for many purposes, but not for the purpose of understanding conservative political appeal. And reading Rand is no help at all in responding to people who "support" her philosophy. Because they don't support her philosophy: they borrow taglines from it to explain or rationalize what they were thinking befdore they evere heard of Rand.
