JG:

In the cognitively dissonant headspace of many right-wing populists & paleocons, I'm quite confident that TARP, PPIP, the Insurance Industry Guaranteed Market Act of 2010, etc. are baleful examples of "government regulation." To my mind, this cognitive dissonance (and its long-term staying power) is more troublesome that putative support for laissez faire (which of course is widely and deeply entrenched as well).

(PS... I am decidedly NOT suggesting the wrongheaded Tom Frankian argument that all the left needs to do to win over the populist right is to appeal to its sense of economic self-interest, or that much headway could or should be made w/these folks.)
