In the context of that time, it is utterly stunning to compare it to the ideas on-going in Berkeley (and probably Chicago) among students (and some faculty) of the same period---and no doubt in France and Germany. Even so, it would have been a great course to take. By this period, Strauss has perfected his thought, ironically just at the moment when it was absolutely the least acceptable to the political climate of the time.
I gave up reading on Strauss when I thought neoconservatives were shown by events to be completely bankrupt. Obama's policies and activities seem to have given them a temporary reprieve, all reset to commit another round of odious disasters.
