BTW, speaking of cultural tranmission on a more individual level, I posted an obituary a couple of weeks about JH Fischer:

I quoted a paragraph to make a joke about how he fuddled student revolutionaries. But the real point of the obituary was that it showed what liberalism with a backbone looks like. Fischer was the guy who integrated the Baltimore school system, and was he was a model of how such things should be done.
He was also David Hackett Fischer's dad.
