Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoğlu eloquently sums up the history and issues of the recent massacre of aid workers (which occurred in international waters, making it an act of piracy and mass murder under international law) and the ongoing crime of the Gaza blockade here:

By one of those unexpected historical accidents which you simply couldn't make up, even if you tried, it seems most of the victims of the massacre were Turkish (one Turkish aid worker was interviewed here: http://www.todayszaman.com/tz-web/news-211873-100-aid-ship-returnee-what-we-experienced-was-inhumane.html).

This is a game-changer. Turkey is a rising semi-periphery, a regional great power with 70 million inhabitants, a renascent economy and a competent military. It is also a democracy (far from perfect, but they've made progress) and a NATO member. They can't be bullied, nor are they susceptible to pressure by a US Empire bogged down in economic crisis and failed colonial wars.
