It is free, in museums, or normal movie price, when they show it in movie houses (which is what they are doing at the moment). It's not that hard to see -- easier than lots of old Italian classics that aren't on DVD.
So you shouldn't shun it on that account.
Like I said, I thought it was just comically dreadful when I previewed it online. But I might have been in a sour mood or had bad luck in my selections. To be fair to Barney, I only viewed 5 minutes and it's a five hour production. If a review from a virtual friend could get me to change my mind, that would be a neat trick.
