Calvin dealt with these complications directly. He recognized and discussed the fact that an inspired text required an inspired reader. He recognized and discussed the unpleasant consequences of that fact, consequences which he did not like at all. Nevertheless he stuck to his guns as it were. One of the most enjoyable accounts of / debates on the whole mess is to be found in dryden's Religio Laici -- a really fine poem, almost as good as Pope.
