Most of the TP folks I know use race as an excuse for the defence of
their privileged economic position, not the other way around.  The
liberals/Democrats help them with this by also putting the blame on
some deep seated  or subconscious racism rather than on the fact that
the economy has begun feeding on the upper middle income folks too.
The birther, religion and socialist bullshit acts the same way: as an
excuse to elbow out an economic position against those in the same
class rather than see the shared exploitation.

And no, many of the TP people I know weren't this way or this bad
before.  The decline of US exceptionalism has a lot to do with their
newly found nativism and constitutional squawking.
