Tolstoi may have been surprised by the ending of Anna Karenina, but I wasn't. Shocked, yes, and aghast, but not surprised. Nor by Madame Bovary, but no shock there, either. I read those for the first time in the same class (along with Emma, a dreary trudge) and, knowing their synopses, expected them to be similar, but no.
