[lbo-talk] the end of Behind the News

Does misery love company?

95.9 FM, KAOS Radio, Austin, TX, also just got shut down by the FCC here in Austin. (yay, Obama era!!!)

KAOS Radio is the Austin station that gave me the chance to turn Radio Schizo (my show) [<http://www.radioschizo.com>] from "merely" a DIY podcast, into an actual FM radio show. It definitely adds cred to say you were/are on FM radio, as I learned -- to mixed feelings.

Austin's KAOS Radio report of their federal raid/shutdown is here: <http://kaosradioaustin.org/node/32295>. Video of the FC agent and Austin cops is there, too. The "shed" you see in the background is the shed from which I broadcasted Radio Schizo.

I guess I didn't realize the Behind the News situation was so dire. :( Then again, KAOS Radio in Austin should have been regarded as an institution after 10+ years on the air here, too. For it to be suddenly canceled by the FCC is pretty fucking wrong, just like "Behind the News"'s shutdown is pretty damn wrong. It will still function "merely" as an internet/podcast station. And I honestly think that Behind the News should, too. I think in the long term it would work out good; witness the YouTube channels by the lesser-relevant, et. al. It could be picked up again in the future by as-yet-unknown-broadcast technologies.

The listenership of WBAI is a shrinking thing. It's mainly having a studio and an engineer - and the credibility that broadcast provides when trying to get guests. "I do a podcast" won't get me into the Council on Foreign Relations.
