The trade unions and allied organizations will continue to support the Democrats, however, because the latter will be seeking to limit the assault from the Republicans in much the same way unions in this period have defensively negotiated with employers to contain rollbacks in the workplace. The problem, of course, is that the DP and union leaderships are reluctant to mobilize their members for fear of losing control of the process and risking more serious defeat - the point of departure for the left in opposition to the leaders of mass-based organizations.
