CB: Wrong. Carter did not respond to the Sandinista offensive which
toppled the Somoza regime in Nicaragua because the Somoza dictatorship
had just killed an American tv reporter. Carter's imperial forbearance
allowed the Sandinistas to establish a government. The
Contra/counterrevolutionary wars in Central America were not started
until Reagan.  The success of the Sandinista revolution relied
critically on Carter's forbearance. It was the Reagan administration
that initiated and hi tech-armed  the counter-revolutionaries (Reagan
: "freedom fighters") in Afghanistan.
