Maybe Boxer and Murray have read Larry Bartels? Or maybe, without reading Bartels, they are acutely aware that Amurricans are apeshit nuts on the tax question, consistently opposing higher taxes on the rich even when it's clearly in their interest to do so? The cognitive deficiency here probably has something to do with the fallacy of composition combined with every Amurrican's conviction that s/he is that special snowflake who will be rich ever-so-soon (because, you know, this is Amurrica and ANYONE CAN GET RICH).

First you said the midterm shellacking was structurally overdetermined by the economy. Now you're saying Obama might have carried out a generational realignment if only he'd said the right things.

This doesn't address the question of why Barbara Boxer and Patty Murray pleaded with Reid not to do the tax issue before the election.
