They were GIs stationed in Germany. Someone should do a doc on American GIs in Germany and music in the U.S. Johnny Cash bought his first guitar in Germany and wrote Folsom Prison Blues there. Elvis got hooked on speed in Germany and also met Priscilla there.
The soundtrack to the DVD has a ton of covers of Monks songs by, among others, The Gossip, The Raincoats, The Fall, Jon Spencer, Singapore Sling, and Alexander Hacke.
