The goal of their fishing expedition was to continue to target individuals with radical politics and sabotage the momentum the Left would have coming out of the USSF.
Read more... Friends and Allies, Although we are still researching the facts behind the raid and grand jury subpoenas of activists in Minneapolis, Chicago, Michigan and North Carolina, we want to be clear about several things:
* The raid on multiple sites of an organization within our movement should alarm us all. It is part of a growing governmental trend targeting the left.
* The FBI continues to stretch beyond all meaning the designation of "terrorist" in order to make wide sweeps and go on fishing expeditions with seemingly very little hard facts. Too often the designation of “terrorist” has been applied to organizations and movements seeking freedom and independence. For example, the ANC was on the “terrorist” list right up to winning electoral victory in South Africa.
* These raids and arrests have the effect of stifling dissent and foreclosing democratic rights of minority viewpoints. We should be concerned, whether or not we agree with the politics of the targeted organization.
* Although the organization in question has a similar name to ours, we are different organizations (we are officially Freedom Road Socialist Organization/Organizacion Socialista del Camino para la Libertad (FRSO/OSCL). We were not targets in these raids at this time.
* In the near future we will have more to say about the implications of these raids. Editor's Note: This is not our planned September eNews, but a statement on the recent raids carried out by the FBI on members of the other organization with a similar name. We also included a new piece on redbaiting which we'd been working on since the US Social Forum, but it seemed like a perfect time to get it around given recent events.
Freedom Road Socialist Organization works to bring into being a socialist movement in the USA – a movement based on the understanding that ending capitalism requires struggling to liberate everyone oppressed by the system's vast, interconnected structure of domination. (We call this perspective intersectionality). We have no illusions that Freedom Road will on its own generate and lead such a movement. But one of our principal tasks is to help bring into being a leading force that can respond appropriately when the conditions to replace capitalism grow ripe. Members of the Freedom Road Socialist Organization are involved in many aspects of the people’s struggles. We are in immigrant workers’ centers, labor unions, and rank and file caucuses. We are in organizations in oppressed communities, like the Black Radical Congress. We are in student groups, teacher and parent organizations, and international solidarity groups.
