You're missing a subtlty here: the US wants "open" access to oil; it 
wants there to be no one who can hold access to oil over it in a 
power-play, like what happened in 1973.  In order to try to guarantee 
that, you have to stack the deck.  The last 40 years -- and maybe 
more -- of "policy objectives" in the Middle East boil down to said 
stacking of said deck.
