I assume you mean "high brow" writers (for if not you forget the recently discussed Ayn Rand, among hundreds of other deserving candidates). Even for high brow choices are plenty. Naipaul. Pamuk. Hesse. D.F.Wallace. But that's just my opinion. And I agree that Rushdie is indeed over rated.
