I've been wondering for years whether someone would point this out.

It's not even changing ideas. Once the working class becomes the vast
majority, as now, popular sovereignty *is equivalent to* the
dictatorship of the proletariat. But of course "popular sovereignty"
can be praised to the heavens at the Fourth of July Seniors Picnic or
whatever.
