There's one problem that tends to mess up, or at least clutter all
studies of mental illness: uncertain diagnosis. You can't trust the
numbers. There is no reason to assume that the present list of "mental
illnesses" won't change again, as it has changed in the past. For
example, no one suffers from hysteria today, but it was once one of the
most 'popular' mental illnesses. Bipolar & schizophrenia are really
difficult to distinguish, especially when taking diagnoses from
different time periods.
