That's one explanation, which doubtlessly contains some merit. A more obvious one, which I suspect is a bigger factor, is that the Brotherhood has been continuously building and organizing its base, through mosques, religious charities and schools, etc., for 83 years, while most of the liberals and secularists have a decade at most under their belts.
