This wonderful story crops up in multiple contexts. I seem to remember it from an Evelyn Waugh novel -- but which one? Told by an Old Family Retainer at a Stately Home, not a Cambridge coll.
The Cambridge quads are Whig quads. The Oxon. quads are Tory quads.
