Angelus: "Wojtek's post seriously underplays the fact that EU is essentially an institution for implementing neoliberalism"

[WS:] I am aware of that and I hinted that in my post. However, it does not really bother me that much. I support the EU for a similar reason that Marx supported capitalism - for its historical role (see, for example his remarks on the British rule in India http://www.marxists.org/archive/marx/works/1853/06/25.htm.) It represents a progress vis a vis an earlier stage, a progress that is a precondition of the future development. It is an improvement, a necessary step if you will, but not the end of the road. Rejecting that improvement is like rejecting an AIDS vaccine on the grounds that it offers only a temporary relief instead curing the disease.

And for the record, based on my reading of history, I do believe that if any progress is to be made - it will be made through parliamentary institutions (such as EU,) and any group that choses to stay outside that process will not count, except perhaps as a minor irritant. So in my mind, the parties that you mention ARE pretty much what counts, and I do not view any 'extraparliamentary' and kindred groups as a political force, let alone one to be reckoned with. You may of course disagree with this opinion but that is the subject of another discussion, which I do not feel like opening at the moment.

Wojtek
