Carrol: "The early leaders, for the most part, are not only self-nominated
(which is the 'healthy' practice) but for the most part actually
self-appointed: hence they are well known politicians, attorneys,
professors, etc. And they _always_ have a "theory" about the scope and
limits and content of the revolution."
[WS:] There might be some truth in it, but I can also think of a more
compelling reason - movements, especially nascent ones often do not have
institutionalized rules - either formal or informal - to negotiate and
settle differences. Most social groups have such rules, social movements
typically don't. So the only way of resolving conflicts and settle
differences is outright competition and elimination or expulsion of the
loser.
