Because O is fundamentally conservative? That video in which he praised Reagan was dismissed by the febrile contingent, but maybe he was telling the truth about how he feels.

I don't even know what it means to say that someone is fundamentally conservative. People are conservative because a) their social location and background socialize them to be or b) because materially it suits their interests. It is the office of the President in the current economic and political situation that is fundamentally conservative. As we can see from Europe, even if Obama was a die hard socialist he wouldn't be doing things much different. This goes to the Tiabbi article too. It isn't Obama or the bankers that are criminals or conservatives. It is the structural location of those positions in the current political and economic reality. [this shouldn't be confused with me saying that the DP could not due anything different today. Given Senate and House dems and activists committed to something to the left, we would have different structural constraints on the parameter of options on Obama's horizon.]
