But Afghanistan is different in the minds of mainstream Democrats, no? A good number of them (quite likely the vast majority) support(ed) it.

Isn’t the anti-war dropoff explained the same way the petering out of any other protest has (Wisconsin, included)? People run out of steam, the system is overwhelming… those not at the core return to their jobs, dealing with life, so on. Especially once the [planned] thing that was being protested against occurs.
