Look at what happens when Gallup asks people what the most important issue facing the country is. On p. 273 of this Gallup compendium - http://bit.ly/l5Uvtw - there's a chart showing "most important problem" from 2000-2007. Iraq was the *number one problem* - ahead of the economy, gas prices, and terrorism - for three years straight in 2005, 2006 and 2007. In 2007 more than 30% named Iraq as the #1 problem.
How many rate Afghanistan the #1 prob today? Here's a Gallup poll from April - http://www.gallup.com/poll/147086/Budget-Rises-Most-Important-Problem-Highest.aspx . The economy-jobs-deficit are at 26%-19%-17%.
Iraq, Afghanistan and all the other wars combined are at 3%.
