[lbo-talk] Michigan Racial integration in the suburbs brings no battles, but issues remain

Past threads on LBO-talk have touched on the Census' reports that Detroit and its suburbs have been the most racially segregated metropolitan area in the US. The new Census report is that there has been a significant migration of Black people out of Detroit to surrounding suburbs, an integrating trend. An earlier report (copied below) found an influx of whites into Detroit. However, a third article indicates perhaps there is starting a new wave of "white flight" out of the these recently, mildly integrated suburban schools.

We shall overcome !

Black influx impacts school choice in Detroit suburbs

Whites seek other education options as blacks move in

Ron French and Mike Wilkinson / The Detroit News

Detroit suburbs are increasingly becoming integrated in neighborhoods, but less so in the classroom.

A Detroit News analysis of U.S. census and state data shows many communities that witnessed large increases in African-American population also saw a striking increase in white students leaving their home towns to attend classes.

The transition can largely be attributed to the schools of choice program, based on an analysis of census and Michigan Department of Education data released this month.

The trend is particularly notable in Macomb County, which led the state in increase in black population, and where one in 10 students takes advantage of schools of choice, often to study in classrooms that are whiter than their neighborhoods

A stunning demographic reversal is taking shape in Detroit.

After six decades of white flight, the percentage of white Detroiters has shot up dramatically, according to a new census survey released Tuesday.

The survey, more estimate than precise numbers, shows that the percentage of white, non-Hispanic Detroiters rose from 8.4% of the city's population in 2008 to 13.3% last year.

Much of the rise can be pegged to younger white people -- along with some empty nesters -- moving to the city, even as African Americans continue to leave for the suburbs.

Hasn't 'white flight' been in reverse in many cities for some time? Certainly London has seen gentrification of some of its inner cities. I thought the same was true of many American cities?

^^^^^ CB: Not much in Detroit until this report. Washington , DC has had a significant increase in the percentage of white residents as compared with the 1970's when it was "Chocolate City"
