I read "Out of Their League" by former pro footballer Dave Meggyesy 
when I was in junior high.  Meggyesey was also a players' union 
organizer and now West Coast director of the union.  He's also taught 
sociology of sports.  His book was one of the more radical books I 
read as a kid.
