A richly deserved drubbing of a predatory real estate mafia with pretensions
of export-platform grandeur. Not that the opposition is any better -- the
Congress folks follow much the same economic agenda. But after a bit of land
reform in the 1970s, there were no substantive differences between the CPIM
regime policies and those of other Indian states. Same corruption, same land
scams, same violence against farmers (including an outright massacre at
Nandigram) -- which is why West Bengal's growth and social outcomes are
indistinguishable from the average among Indian states.
But overall, the elections at least opened up the possibility of a renascent Left in that part of South Asia.
