In the imagination of most of this piece's American readers, this is a showcase for the irretrievably corrupted moral values of the anti-American French left. In fact, BHL is neither anti-American (in France he's known as the great Atlanticist and scourge of anti-Americanism) nor left (he's close to Sarkozy, without even mentioning the 70's anti-left "anti-totalitarianism" which made his reputation).
