Did the Owenites want to finance the commune with debt (they don't intend to pay back) and become a economically successful and viable alternative to capitalism so that more and more people will join it? I was reading up on the ideas behind the Oakland Commune and that seems to be a major point. The idea is to fund the commune by any means necessary and to present an economically viable alternative that is so successful that people will fight for it - much as the bourgeoisie (it's culture, ideals, values, practices, etc.) emerged *prior* to the bourgeois revolution.

Have been curious about this but haven't had time to do the research.

<>  You are right. There is not much similarity with Owen either. One <> similarity is that they are trying within the space they are occupying <> to set up new social relations that embody their ideals . Propaganda <> of the deed. The Utopian socialists also tried to set up alternative <> societies in sync with their ideals. But OWS is not following any <> blueprints for an ideal socialist society. <> <> Cheers, ken <>   <> Blog: http://kenthink7.blogspot.com/index.html <> Blog: http://kencan7.blogspot.com/index.html <> <> <> ________________________________ <> From: "from_alamut at yahoo.com" <from_alamut at yahoo.com> <> To: "lbo-talk at lbo-talk.org" <lbo-talk at lbo-talk.org> <> Sent: Monday, November 21, 2011 10:00:09 PM <> Subject: Re: [lbo-talk] Anarchism in The Weekly Standard <> <> Anarchism never had a fascination with Utopian socialist schemes.  <>   <> peace <>   <> Jim Davis <> Ozark Bioregion, USA, Planet Gaia  <> <> check out my books at: <> http://www.lulu.com/spotlight/from_alamut <> <> <> <>>________________________________ <>> From: ken hanly <northsunm at yahoo.com> <>>To: "lbo-talk at lbo-talk.org" <lbo-talk at lbo-talk.org> <>>Sent: Monday, November 21, 2011 8:17 PM <>>Subject: Re: [lbo-talk] Anarchism in The Weekly Standard <>> <>> The article was a good read and there do seem to be family <>> resemblances between utopian socialism and some in the OWS groups. <>> However the part about Fourier is rather ridiculous.
