[WS:] This is what she is actually saying: "Should college students play sports? Sure, for fun. Not to make money for their schools, massage the egos of donors and alumni, raise up false idols like Joe Paterno-and deprive themselves of a real education in the process." Athletic programs for a few are a drain on resources for the many.

Shane's suggestion of professionalizing is acceptable; a union of college athletes might do it. And I don't think many people, including Dennis R apparently, have any idea of the terrible damage to the "beautiful" human body organized sports cause. Check the mortality tables on former Pro football players.

Has anyone examined the contracts between various schools, conferences, etc. and the TV networks. It football does earn a profit for any school, it comes from that. But even then for the vast majority of schools the athletic program loses money.
