[lbo-talk] On Selecting Goals of Demonstrations: An Example

Perhaps the discussion of goals chosen by mass demonstrations will be somewhat illuminated by the following, especially the long list of endorsers of the Oct. 8 action. Each of those endorsers will bring anywhere from two or three people to hundreds to the rally. Note that the more specific the Call was as to purpose, the fewer there would be on that list. Probably the specific Anti-Obama cast to the call has already reduced the number of those who wiil endorse or come. That's a necessary narrowing, however, at the present time because the Rally also has to excite potential participants, not just appeal to their current political views. That is just one of the reasons anti-war campaigns must NOT try to be 'nuanced' about the war. No anti-war campaign, fore example, will get off the ground without the cooperation of several major pacifist groups.

We'll be talking about our BNCPJ'S contingent at tomorrow's meeting. Good speakers.

Anti-war activist and frequent Obama critic Bruce Dixon will be the keynote speaker at a march on Obama 2012 national headquarters on the 10th anniversary of the U.S. invasion of Afghanistan.

The march and rally will begin at 12 noon, Saturday, October 8 at the intersection of Michigan Avenue and Congress Parkway.

Dixon is Managing Editor of Black Agenda Report and author of pieces such as “Barack Obama VS Those Craaaazy Republicans: Is He the Lesser Evil, or the More Effective Evil?”

Joining Dixon on the podium will be people like Mary Dean, a volunteer with Voices for Creative Nonviolence, who returned from a month-long visit to Afghanistan in mid-August, and Alejandro Villatoro of Iraq Veterans Against the War, an Army Reservist who returned from a deployment to Afghanistan in mid-August.
