I've often heard it asserted that a humane social vision is a prerequisite for sustainability (or whatever you want to call it), but don't see how that follows. Resource constraints make great truncheons and I fear the foot dragging is going to deliver just that, or make some brutal command economy urgent for survival. I don't think that scenario is necessarily locked in (yet), but there are plenty of unhappy outcomes to choose from.
