PS - Aside from the poor record of arguments from historical inevitability,
there's also a hazard of millennialist wish projection, which I've
mentioned before: the tendency to imagine that the tribulations of your
favorite zombpocalypse (Y2K, peak oil, the Coming Crash) will force the
issue and give rise to your pet desired society, whether Portlandia writ
large, Kunstler's mid-industrial Northeast, or the regretful necessity to
shoot marauding "former welfare recipients".

Not necessarily central to the analysis, but something to watch out for.
