In 17th-c usage "wit referred to the perceptions of resemblances; "judgment" to perceiving differences. It was a rough and ready guide to categorization.

(Quoted from memory)

Wit and judgment often are at strife, Though meant each other's aid like man & wife.

One glaring chaos and wild heap of wit.

Some to whom nature in wit have been profuse, Want as much more to put it to its use.

A " glaring chaos and wild heap of wit." Seems to characterize the present thread.
