Orwell and the POUM fought alongside the anarchists. The important anarchist movement in Spain split when the leader of its trade union federation, Garcia Oliver, joined the Popular Front government and collaborated with the Spanish CP in the suppression of dissident Catalonian anarchists and the POUM. Evidently, even the anarchists could not remain simon pure when the prospect of governing beckoned for the first and only time.
