I take that as humor. Here is a program to construct an oval helicoid, by 
vector approximation:

The point is that the old carpenters knew how to do build this. The stairway 
I referenced in the Barbarini was done ca. 1625.

There is a chicken-egg dilemma here, but I can't pin it down.
