in grad school, a bunch of us started working on plans to fire up our own university. someone had a lead on some old property in the hills of n. California. as we looked into it, there have been free and alternatives universities offered for decades. locally, we started school for labor related themes - but it blew up because CPUSA guy, uh, coulda used some lessons in what it takes to be project manager. by which i mean, no project manager in her right mind thinks she can *set* deadlines for engineers and then tell them when the work needs to be done. lol anyway, we had courses on labor history through film, people's history, intro economics, current social problems, union history, labor law, poetry, lit, etc.

The most popular one? Dealing with your boss. People came to the class and talked about the problems they had at work, which weren't always directly with your boss. The woman running it was genius at using a kind of consciousness-raising approach where people bitched about what went on at work and then unpacked it in terms of a materialist analysis of what's really going on.
