Somebody suggested that zombies are the "regular guys" of the undead to the haughty rock stars that vampires play. Vampires seem to have been popular for longer but at a lower intensity -- I don't remember them being so big in the 80s. Both seem to be a constant presence now.

My daughter and I went to the SF ballet on Friday and, while looking for parking, saw an enormous line of people snaking around the block. We parked and found ourselves in the bookstore where the line was heading. Anne Rice was in town signing copies of her vampire books.
