We live an itinerant life, and we would be hardpressed if we had no car. For one thing, all our possessions are in our minivan. We talk a lot while we are on the road, about matters high and low, so I don't think driving makes us stupid (It is possible that the issue is moot since we might both be maximally stupid to begin with). We've seen some insane things on the highways and biways of the U.S. We have a deep respect for how badly many of our fellow citizens drive. We wish there were good high speed trains, good public transportation in every town and city, limited need for big trucks, more and safer bikeways, that every city was walkable, and everything that would reduce the need for people to drive cars. When we are not in the car, we are out hiking and walking whenever and wherever we can. Sadly, we are finding that motorized vehicles---jeeps, ATVs, motorbikes---are rapidly taking over what is left of nature itself. These vehicles are getting bigger, more powerful, and capable of penetrating the remotest places. They wreak absolute havoc wherever they go. Bikes (sometimes) and horses (always) do great damage too. Had I a weapon, I might have shot a couple of horsemen and Jeepers. We can't seem to leave anything alone. Hiking is never good enough. Everything has to be as extreme as possible. Maybe this is because for many people, ordinary life is so boring and devoid of meaning. Or maybe they're just all assholes! Or maybe walking and hiking aren't all that profitable.
