Bill: "Is the lesson you draw from this history that the Egyptian armed forces have earned the right to dominate the political life of the nation in perpetuity? "

[WS:] Not at all. The lesson that I drew is that the role of the military is far more complex than simplistic caricatures of it circulating in liberal and leftist circles. It is neither inherently good nor inherently bad, but it needs to be judged in the proper context.

As far as Egypt is concerned, the choice is not between a liberal democracy and a military rule, but between a military rule and an Islamist theocracy.

I am not a big fan of either, but if I were forced to make a choice, I would go with the military rule. The reason is that the military rule has a better track record in the region than alternatives: theocracies or feudal monarchies (cf. Turkey vs. Iran or Saudi Arabia).
