[lbo-talk] Apple conspired to raise e-book prices

Woj, please. I didn't say they did original work. I said their products were superior.

Of course they took a lot of stuff from Xerox, but they did a lot of work on that stuff. And, it's not like you could go out and buy Xerox's version instead.

I can't say anything for their products now because I haven't used them in over ten years. But in the period when I was using Apple products: 1989 to 1999, there is no question that they made the best products out there. They lasted for ever; they didn't break; you didn't get viruses; and the interface was a great gift to people who don't like command lines....and a greater gift to those who wanted ways of thinking about non-command line interfaces.

[WS:] Many doubt that. For example, their main attraction for a while was graphic interface, which they "borrowed" from Xerox.

>From the start, their strategy was niche-seeking where they had few or no
competitors. So the quality of their products was not exactly comparable. They maintained the impression of superiority through clever marketing stunts and appeal to snobbery - as long as they did not face any serious competition. But as soon as others moved to their market niches, they started losing ground. The smart phone or tablet market is a case in point.

Personally, I think that the only reason they can stay in business despite their monopoly pricing is their aggressive marketing based on appeals to cultural identity and snobbery.
